Academic Opportunities and Challenges Abound at King's College in Wilkes-Barre

King's College is an independent, coed, four-year Catholic college with 2,100 students. Founded in 1946 by the Holy Cross Priests and Brothers from the University of Notre Dame, King's prepares students for a purposeful life, with an education that integrates the human values inherent in a broadly based liberal arts curriculum. The College encourages the religious, moral, personal, and social development of its students.

In addition to the undergraduate degrees, King's College offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in health-care administration, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in reading or curriculum and instruction, and a five-year physician assistant studies program leading to a master's degree.

Academic advising begins before students enroll and continues with an innovative program of career development across the curriculum. King's Academic Skills Center includes a nationally certified tutoring program and a faculty-staffed writing center. More than 70 percent of students who attend King's graduate from the College, which is well above the national average, and 99 percent are employed or attend graduate school within six months of graduation.
King's Faculty: Focused on Teaching
Faculty members at King's College in Wilkes-Barre are committed to excellent teaching as their first responsibility, both in the core curriculum of general studies which all undergraduates follow, and in the major programs of the College of Arts and Sciences and the William G. McGowan School of Business. King's College has 154 full-time and 89 part-time faculty members. Eighty-five percent of the full-time faculty members have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree. Graduate assistants do not teach courses. The student-faculty ratio is 12:1.

King's College offers students more than 40 undergraduate degrees and areas of study, 11 concentrations, and seven pre-professional programs. All of the degree programs at King's College encourage students to develop practical experience and skills that will allow them to pursue rewarding and successful careers.
Outstanding Facilities
The comfortable urban campus comprises eight city blocks and features many buildings and centers that house King's numerous academic programs, including the Charles E. and Mary Parente Life Sciences Center, the Mulligan Physical Sciences Center, and the William G. McGowan School of Business. The 15-acre campus also includes Monarch Court; the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center, which offers an art gallery, an outdoor waterfall and patio, a student restaurant, and marketplace dining; and the J. Carroll McCormick Campus Ministry Center. The William S. Scandlon Physical Education Center features a 3,200-seat basketball arena, wrestling facilities, racquetball and handball courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a wellness center, and a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility.

The new King's on the Square facility is a vibrant and dynamic center for learning and living in the heart of downtown Wilkes-Barre. King's on the Square is home to a number of in-demand programs, including Physician Assistant Studies, Athletic Training, and Exercise Science. The new center also includes attractive and safe student residences that bring students in direct contact with the downtown environment; a community-centered art and cultural display center, and a Chick-fil-A restaurant for students, faculty, staff, and the downtown community. King's on the Square has quickly established itself as a safe, productive, and bustling downtown anchor.

Residence halls have cable television, wireless Internet access, and 24-hour computer labs. Many of King's athletic teams train and compete just 2 miles from campus at the Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex, a 33.5-acre athletic facility that includes McCarthy Stadium; a field house; and fields for baseball, softball, men's and women's soccer, football, and field hockey.
Financial Aid Options at King's College
King's assists all qualified students through its financial aid programs. Currently, more than 97 percent of King's students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study, or loans. Aid is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, the difference between the total cost of education and the expected family contribution.

In addition to financial aid programs, installment payment plans are available, offering students and/or their families the ability to make monthly payments throughout the academic year. Students who wish to be considered for financial aid must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the King's College Financial Aid Application.

King's College offers deferred payment plans, which allow families to make monthly payments on the balance of tuition, fees, room, and board after any financial aid has been received. There are no interest or finance charges on deferred payment plans. Parent PLUS Loans and private alternative loans are also available to help finance educational costs.
On- and Off-Campus Activities Create Vibrant Student Life at King's College
King's has more than fifty student organizations, providing students countless opportunities to explore interests outside of the classroom. King's has 23 NCAA Division III teams including men's baseball, basketball, football, ice hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and wrestling; women's basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball; and coed cross-country. The College also offers cheerleading, ice hockey, and track and field as club sports. Intramural sports include basketball, flag football, indoor soccer, racquetball, and dodgeball. Other cocurricular activities include academic clubs in almost every department: the King's Players (theater), Cantores Christi Regis (choir), Campus Ministry, the Experiencing the Arts Series, The Crown (student newspaper), the Regis (yearbook), and the SCOP (literary magazine).

The King's campus is located in a residential area near downtown Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a city of approximately 50,000 on the banks of the Susquehanna River. A growing city, Wilkes-Barre has developed both economically and culturally, yet it has avoided many typical urban problems. Shopping malls, multiplex theaters, a brand new riverfront park, art galleries, and restaurants are nearby. Two blocks from King's is the F. M. Kirby Center, which has hosted national performances, music groups, traveling theater, and more. National recording acts regularly perform in nearby venues.

King's is a short drive from several ski resorts, state parks, and major lakes where students can participate in many seasonal outdoor activities. Students can also enjoy professional sports action including the New York Yankees' AAA baseball team, the Pocono International Raceway which hosts two NASCAR races each season, and the Pittsburgh Penguins' minor-league ice hockey team. The Mohegan Sun Arena is the host to many concerts and events, and is the site of the King's commencement. The campus is close to major metropolitan areas including New York City and Philadelphia (each a 2½-hour drive); Washington, D.C., and the attractions of New England are within a 4-hour drive.
